Whenever, you have a dispute with hospital bills or fail to pay them as medical bills become due, there is a brief period of time that the hospital will try to resolve the matter with you before they send it off to a medical bill collections agency.
When your bills arrives at the collection agency, they will start to send letters to you offering to settle your debt. In some cases, if you don’t respond to them, they will report the failure to pay the bills on your credit record. This is their strongest technique because if you care about your credit record or credit score then they know the only way for you to get that fixed is for you to pay your bill in full. Once you pay the bill in full they will agree to contact the credit bureaus to remove the mark within 30 days.
So if you have legitimate disputes with your medical bill, its a good idea to contact the collections agency and tell them your position so that they can try to help resolve this matter. In most cases, they will talk to the emergency room or hospital to verify the charges or to look into your disputes. Don’t ignore them if you have legitimate disputes. Its not going to help you settle the matter later on, unlike when you are dealing with other types of debt.
